Don’t let your school holidays be a bye – hit ’em for six in Adelaide

By Brett Pilgrim

The start of the July holidays means a few things. It means good old-fashioned, wholesome holiday fun, the shouts of children ringing through the streets and, if you're a parent, a desperate scramble to find some stimulating activities for your kids so they don't spend the weeks lounging around.

Luckily, owners of property in Adelaide have the school holiday period sorted. It just so happens that over the first two weeks of July the Gillepsie Centre is offering vacation coaching programmes to get that cover drive – or maybe that slower ball – in tip top shape.

The current clinic will offer both the regular two-hour classes and brand-new six-hour classes – a first for the centre. Each day, its line-up of experienced, Cricket Australia accredited coaches – some of whom are former and even current players – will identify the strengths and weaknesses of your young batsman or bowler. So you may even get to see a famous face when you come drop off or pick up your young one!

Part of the six-hour sessions will involve watching cricket videos to analyse and get more familiar with the ins and outs of the game, working with a bowling machine and doing some fielding.

If six hours seems like too much for you, there's plenty of fun and useful programmes that are part of the two-hour sessions too. Your kids will get together in six-player groups and take part in drills, game scenarios and net sessions to build up their skills. All the kids are put together in age groups, so there's no chance of any mismatches.

If you reside in property in North Adelaide, the centre is only around a mere 5km from the area, so it's only a spin bowler's run-up away. Give it a go these holidays.
