Residents of property in Burnside will be happy to hear that the swimming centre will open Saturday, October 5 for the summer season. The pool will close early, however, in order to begin a $5 million renovation project.
Though the early closure may be inconvenient for residents looking for a place to cool off a little bit later into the summer, the redevelopment will bring a beautiful new look to the swimming centre and upgrades to the facilities.
According to Burnside Swimming Centre Chief Executive Officer Paul Deb, the remodelling itinerary includes substantial improvements the the main building, aquatic operations and aesthetic improvements to the landscape and recreational areas.
The council decided the shorter summer pool season was the best way to complete the renovations without disadvantaging the community with a total closure of the area during the hottest, sunniest time of year.
The Burnside Swimming Centre will close February 2 2014, and reopen in early December. The facility, which is mostly original and about 45-years-old, was constructed in 1966 and underwent one significant upgrade to the main entrance in 1996 and a replacement of pipe work in 2005.
