Adelaide is the place to be after dark

By Brett Pilgrim

Those who own property in Adelaide are blessed with a fantastic array of restaurants, cafes and entertainment. A new report from the the National Local Government Drug and Alcohol Advisory Committee reveals that residents are enthusiastic to support local business in the evening, with food and entertainment sales revenues showing strong results across the city.

The Australian Night Time Economy report shed some moonlight on what Adelaide residents like to do after dark. Lord Mayor of the City of Adelaide Martin Haese said the city's night time economy is continuing to support economic growth, with revenue from restaurants and entertainment venues growing over the year.

"What's pleasing about Adelaide's results in this report is the consistent growth in the night time economy over the five year reporting period which has seen sales revenues for participating businesses up by 7.1 per cent or $67 million," he said.

"While the number of businesses operating in the entertainment and drink sectors hasn't grown, entertainment businesses have seen a 13 per cent increase in sales revenues and an encouraging 7 per cent increase in the number of people employed in their sector to service the night time economy."

This is a fantastic result for the South Australian capital, following concerted local government efforts to grow Adelaide businesses in the evening. The City of Adelaide recently announced the Good Evening, Adelaide strategy, a unique initiative to encourage more people to explore and use the city after 5 p.m. Mr Haese noted that an expanding night time economy would provide a space for businesses and employment to flourish.

"Actions in the strategy are aimed at making it easier for people to see what's on offer in the city throughout the evening, as well as support new and existing businesses to operate at this time," he noted.
