By Brett Pilgrim

Being an owner of real estate in Adelaide brings you many advantages – one of which is the outstanding opportunities for retail therapy! The rich array of shops, restaurants, cafes and cultures venues is part and parcel of what makes the City of Churches such a unique and varied place to live. Things look ready to improve even further, with Adelaide City Council releasing its plans to foster the city's retail sector.

The City Retail Strategy has been developed to make Adelaide a true destination for all things shopping and hospitality, setting the scene for economic growth and job creation. Lord Mayor Martin Haese said creating a strong retail centre will be a cornerstone of the South Australian capital's economic success. Already, visitors and locals spend around $1.56billion in city businesses each year, according to council figures – and 220,000 workers and visitors make their way into the the centre every day.

"Council is committed to working with retailers to help drive the city's retail strategy – the first of its type for the city – and a blueprint for a strong and vibrant retail sector in Adelaide," Mr Haese said.

The council will introduce a wealth of improvements and developments to the retail sector. Some of these include encouraging improvements to public transport, including a second inter-peak public transport fare from 7pm until 9pm weekdays, as well as tapping into digital technology to create a unique shopping experience. There will also be physical improvements made to South Australia's premier shopping precinct, Rundle Mall, which will receive a significant $30million upgrade.

Manager of Rundle Place Centre Kate Jarman said the strategy should offer the city what it needs to grow and develop as a retail destination.

"To be competitive in this retail environment, all stakeholders need to work together to ensure the CBD continues to be the best destination for new, innovative and international retailers," she said.
